Chapter 18 - Origins and Identity
Heather selected six highlights from her life story and created this rug to show them. Her story starts at the age of eight lying on the sand at Roker beach, Sunderland. The ship and the quayside represent Heather's husband Les and his life as a Merchant Navy engineer. Heather's great-great-grandfather, John Elliott, was a keelman and he is shown wearing his smart uniform. Heather set up a community interest company, Rug Aid, to help disadvantaged people and she has hooked herself teaching rug-making students on a Gambian beach complete with overhanging palm trees.
